20th anniversary of Kolbenschmidt Shanghai Piston
Booming business requires new capacities
Chinese piston specialist Kolbenschmidt Shanghai Piston Co., Ltd. (KSSP) is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017. Founded as a joint venture in August 1997 between SAIC Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and world-wide operating piston producer KS Kolbenschmidt (Rheinmetall Automotive/ Germany), KSSP has over the years built up a constantly expanding market position as a leading tier-one automotive component manufacturer in China.
New generation of passenger car piston assembly with 1.7 percent CO2 reduction
For years now, automotive legislation has been requiring a reduction in emissions. Concurrently, automakers' demands regarding piston life-time and loading have risen. To address these trends, KS Kolbenschmidt has in recent years consistently expanded its capabilities in matters of systems integration and tribology, and one step in this direction has been the successful alliance with Riken, a Japanese piston ring manufacturer. One striking example of this cooperation is the development of custom-tailored piston assemblies with a high degree of friction reduction yet able to fulfil tough engineering challenges.
Market innovation: new fuel vapor pump
Today’ strict emission standards govern not only car emissions, they apply to fuel vapors, too. In most cases, these vapors are trapped in an activated carbon canister mounted close to the fuel tank. This canister needs to be regularly purged. For this purpose, Pierburg GmbH has now developed a compact innovative pump that works even without the intake pipe vacuum necessary until now. The electric pump is the first of its kind and will go into a customer’s series production in 2018.
Future market: Pedelecs
New player in electric propulsion market
With its freshly established start-up Amprio GmbH, the Rheinmetall Group is entering the rapidly expanding market of propulsion for pedelecs, electric motor-assisted bicycles, with a rated capacity of 250 watts and a top speed of 25 km/h. The company is contributing the experience it has accumulated over decades in electric drive units for auxiliary equipment in the auto industry.
Compact exhaust-gas recirculation valve saves space
For years now the Pierburg Group has been systematically expanding its portfolio of emission-reduction components. The most recent addition to the range is a compact exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) valve for low-pressure applications. The new component comes with the important advantage of a space saving layout combined with an indirect DC-motor.
Another electric-mobility order
Rheinmetall Automotive to deliver heater/cooler modules for electric buses
Pierburg GmbH, Neuss, which belongs to first-tier auto-industry supplier Rheinmetall Automotive, has, with its first small-series contract, launched the marketing of a newly developed heater/cooler module for electric vehicles. Besides heating and cooling the passenger compartment, the module also performs the important function of controlling the temperature of the battery system on electrically powered vehicles.
