Sustainability: Between internal combustion engine and e-mobility

E-mobility is a trend that describes the transformation of our industry and our society. Sustainability and the avoidance of emissions are increasingly becoming the focus of public attention. Rheinmetall Automotive supports this dynamic transformation process with products that can be used for hybrid-powered vehicles as well as for internal combustion engines.

Sustainable for hybrid-powered vehicles with gasoline engine
Compliance with emissions and pollutant reduction is no longer limited to the emissions of vehicles alone, but also to the emissions of their fuel vapours. Therefore Rheinmetall Automotive manufactures the Fuel Tank Isolation Valve (FTIV) for hybrid-powered vehicles and vehicles with a gasoline engine that comply with the EURO 6 D Temp-EVAP-ISC emissions standard.

The FTIV is part of the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP), which limits evaporative emissions. The FTIV tank shut-off valve interrupts the tank supply when driving electrically or when parking. The connection from the tank to the engine is hermetically sealed with the FTIV in the phases in which the combustion engine is not running. The FTIV then controls the flow of the fuel vapours stemming from the fuel tank, which flow in the direction of the activated carbon filter.

Once the filtered fuel vapours have reached the activated carbon tank, they must be flushed on a regular basis. For this application, Rheinmetall Automotive has developed an innovative, compact pump – the Electrical Vapor Pump (EVAP). The EVP is a small pump that actively cleans and flushes the fuel vapour in the carbon tank. It is the first electric pump of its kind to go into series production in 2018 for several customers in NAFTA and China.

The FTIV is light and compact, so it has a low power consumption. A low pressure drop and fail-safe functions make the FTIV a robust and durable valve.
